Paul started work in 1980 as an assistant to John Vaughn, the British interior and fashion photographer. From 1984 to 1989 he worked as a photographer for international fashion and interior design magazines and expanded into advertising campaigns. 

 

While working as a photographer, he was asked to direct fashion short films for television and corporate image films for brands such as O'Neill and Hennes & Mauritz. Gradually, he moved into the music video business during 1989 - 1990, giving up photography entirely. He spent a year in London during which he directed music videos for the British music industry and started directing commercials.
